This was a great story, not in the usual way of how one couple ends up in the Witness Protection Program, is secreted away from Mafia retribution in some obscure town, in an obscure role not to be discovered by the bad guys, until they be put away from taking revenge on someone with tons of knowledge about their shady deals. Jimmy is a New Yorker of Irish descent, who makes it good as an attorney with a knack for successfully solving cases, and his wife Gina, who earns her RN, and as they embark on what should be a successful life together, but Jimmy finds himself in too deep with an Italian client named Valachi. Up to that point, just an ordinary mobster story of a lawyer being in a position of revealing what he knows in exchange for charges not being brought against himself for making a little extra himself on the side. Once the couple has been spirited away in their new home in a small community in Colorado, Jimmy's childhood talents with healing animals come to the fore, and he comes face to face with Claire, the talking mule, and the story gets even better after Jimmy rescues Claire. Not wanting to give the rest of the story away, Jimmy and Gina make friends with some of the locals, who all have their unusual stories, which just gets weirder and weirder. Tom McCaffery tells a compelling, even believable, tale up to a point, with humor and a great story telling ability, and an ending with a final shootout that one just could not have predicted. If you like an ordinary tale of mobsters verses the Good Guys, this just is anything but ordinary. But if you like an unbelievable story told in such a way that the people (and the animals), are real, but in unusual circumstances, then you will love this book. There is some violence, but not too graphic, told with a touch of philosophy, and some of the flair of speech, as any New Yorker, would no doubt, find normal, but acceptable in the context of the story, but otherwise acceptable for teenagers through old folks with a good sense of humor. I have just finished The Wise Ass and I am truly sorry the adventure has ended. I so enjoyed the author’s engaging writing and the memorable characters he has developed. I loved that it embraced the LGBT community and that there are so many powerful female characters, including Claire the Mule, who has become my favorite literary animal Character. It takes a legal drama and by weaving in the paranormal in such a plausible fashion turns it into fantastical rollercoaster ride with a killer of an ending. Highly recommend this book and cannot wait fir the sequel.
